House Democrats paring cost of health care bill

House Democrats say they are getting close to President Barack Obama's cost target for health care overhaul legislation.

A spokesman for Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California said Friday that preliminary numbers from congressional budget umpires indicate that the bill will come in under Obama's target of $900 billion over 10 years.

The numbers are in flux, however, because Democratic leaders are still tinkering with the latest draft of the legislation. "No final policy decisions have been made on how to proceed," said spokesman Brendan Daly.

The latest Congressional Budget Office estimates do not include some $240 billion over ten years to address Medicare payments to doctors.
