_______________EXPECTING THE WORST BY JENNIFER REESE (10/13/97)
Bravo to Jennifer Reese and her critique of that damn "What to Expect" book! I gained a whopping 50 pounds with my first child 10 years ago and although I had my pre-pregnancy figure back three months after giving birth, I was determined to not gain that much weight with No. 2. I followed that stupid "Best Odds" diet to a T and looked longingly upon all the goodies I denied myself for the health of my baby.

Well, baby No. 2 came out perfectly healthy, just like No. 1, who got lots of "bad" food, but this time I had gained 52 pounds! While it took six months to take it all off this time around, I attribute much of that extra time to the fact that I'm not 20 years old anymore. It certainly did not help me to be on any "Best Odds" diet, and my baby probably would have enjoyed some goodies right along with me.

Now I am pregnant with No. 3 and I am determined to enjoy what may very well be my last pregnancy. I'm going to eat Cheese Broccoli soup, red beans with white rice and all the white-sugar sweetened cookies I want, and something tells me I'll probably gain about 50-something pounds once more. Who cares? I'm going to have a good time eating, because after nine weeks of morning sickness and a 13-pound weight loss I think I've earned it.

I loved Jennifer Reese's article on "What to Expect" all up until this part: "After breast-feeding for a few months, I weighed less than I did when I got pregnant. So there."

This sentence made me feel PRETTY BAD about myself, as someone who wasn't so lucky AND was hurt by the warnings that I might not lose what I gained during pregnancy. Two years later I am still trying to lose the weight.

Congratulations to Ms. Reese, but ...

Jennifer Reese's article was fabulous! I've never said anything about the book because so many people love it, I thought there was something wrong with me! Thank you so much! I'm also nursing my baby (19 months later!) and have also benefited from the weight loss that comes with breast-feeding. Please tell her, "Thanks"!
