Nightline in Prime Time (10 p.m., ABC) continues its "Brave New World" series with a show devoted to the brain, brain injuries and brain surgeons.

Chris Rock hosts the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards (8 p.m., MTV), which are taking place for the first time at New York City's Metropolitan Opera House. The opera-rock crossover is intriguing; performers include Ricky Martin, Backstreet Boys, Lauryn Hill and Will Smith, with appearances by the cast of "The Blair Witch Project," Madonna, Janet Jackson, Adam Sandler, Susan Sarandon and the ubiquitous Britney Spears. The documentary The Road to Rapture (9 p.m. EDT/10 PDT, A&E) chronicles the history of apocalypse theories.
